This is the area in Milan where I live: port Ticino, south west of the city.
It ´s the oldest part. The ships were built by the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, called "the Moor" in the fifteenth century, designed by Leonardo da Vinci. These waterways, fitted with locks, were designed to bring to town on barges Candoglia marble blocks from Lake Maggiore for the construction of the Cathedral.
On their sides (one called the bank, and the other the towpath) is held every month of the most important and crowded market of antiques.
The district has remained one hundred years ago, with small houses with courtyards and balconies in stone, and now has also become the most attractive location for nightlife, with numerous establishments, pizzerias and pubs, there are many survivors of the workshops, that in past centuries had made the city the largest commercial hub of the Po Valley.
The churches are among the oldest: toward the center of St. Ambrose, patron saint of Milan, the fourth century. AD then-San Lorenzo, built on the ruins of a Roman basilica, S. Eustorgio, where the relics of the Magi, and later the Dominican convent in the adjacent seat of the Inquisition, S. Christopher, votive chapel built by the Visconti Dukes on the banks of the Naviglio Grande.
