Museum of The Last Supper - MI

Leonardo painted the Last Supper in the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie by Ludovico il Moro, in a period ranging from 1494 to 1497.
The artist, in the case of painting on the wall, it was not given as resistant to the traditional technique, which requires a quick application of color on the plaster is still wet, but wanted to test an innovative method that would allow him to intervene on ´ dry plaster and then to come back several times on the work taking care of every detail. Unfortunately, Leonardo´s insights proved to be wrong, and soon, for an ´unfortunate combination of causes, the painting began to deteriorate. Over the centuries, as a result, many restorations followed in a desperate attempt to save the masterpiece. In 1999, after more than twenty years of work, it was concluded that the last conservative intervention by the removal of many touch-ups, has unearthed what remained of the original drafts.

The extreme fragility of the painting, whose surface is similar to a giant puzzle that you have lost a irrime-disabled persons ´infinite number of cards, has now led to the adoption of stringent safeguards to prevent changes in humidity, the´ air pollution and dust. The result has been the need to regulate the flow of visitors, who can have access to the dining hall into a maximum of 25 at a time. To facilitate the influx of more people, the time of the visit was limited to 15 minutes, but this restriction has, however, the Last Supper to be the site most visited museum in Milan.
The Last Supper belongs to the Italian state and is managed by the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage and Landscape in Milan, with the support of the Regional Directorate for Cultural Heritage and Landscape in Lombardy, along with the Istituto Centrale del Restauro and the Superintendence for the Heritage Historic, Artistic and Ethno-anthropological di Milano, shall provide the constant care required by the Last Supper.
